(Alternate Title: The Bookstagram Update Nobody Asked For)
If you’ve been around for a while, you may remember when I first fell down the #bookstagram rabbit hole. I first made the account in November 2017 as a way to share more about my grad school experience and motivate me to enjoy reading again. It was great for a while, and then I got hyperfocused and obsessed, and then I missed actually sharing what was happening in my life. And then grad school ended and Covid started and life had no meaning for a sec, right?!
But in a time when everything else was becoming objectively worse, my relationship with reading got a little bit better! By which I mean I was reading for fun, or at all. So anyway, with no real plan or end goal, I randomly started posting on the bookstagram again. And it’s been fun and bizarrely motivating once again! I find myself reaching for a book more often, and scrolling posts about books feels less icky than scrolling random content.
I also feel like the vibe on Bookstagram has changed a lot in the years past. It feels less pressure for perfect flatlays and high-achieving reading goals. Instead, I see creators sharing more casually and candidly about whatever they want. I think it’s going to be fun! Especially because when I started posting, the SJM girlies were all in their Throne of Glass era. I was such a hater in my first bookstagram phase that I never read the books that are popular on the app that I didn’t even realize how fun it is to actually read the books that everyone is talking about. Because then you have book friends to talk about books with!
Of course, it only took like two weeks for me to get overwhelmed with everything else and drop off again. I’m sure that will continue to happen into eternity. I’m aiming for about 3 books per month (because seriously, how are these people reading hundreds of books?!), but I’m still working slowly through the Throne of Glass tandem read, so I haven’t actually finished any books this month. But I just feel like, oh well? I’m reading and I’m having fun and I’m posting about it occasionally for an audience of basically no one because all of my followers are from 5 years ago! Anyway, that’s all. More soon maybe!
